Tenute Eméra

in the Heart of Primitivo, the Kingdom of Biodiversity

Tenute EméraThe name pays homage to Hemera, the Greek goddess who represents the light of day, both a tribute to the Ancient Greek culture and a reference to the geographical location of the estate, the easternmost edge of Italy which first witnesses the sunrise.

TENUTE EMÉRA is the largest of Claudio Quarta’s wineries, it extends over a property of about 80 hectares, of which almost 50 hectares of vineyard: a large vineyard close to the Ionian Sea, located in the heart of both Manduria DOP and Lizzano DOP in Puglia.

Immersed in the vineyards there is the historic Masseria Nitti-Quarta, once owned by the first President of Italy following World War I, Francesco Saverio Nitti (1919-20); it preserves traces of local wine history, such as the barrel cellar and the ancient millstones for wine making. Today these are used to relive the excitement of the traditional grape grape crush during the Capucanali festival, a tradition recovered by Alessandra and Claudio, which every year at the end of summer celebrates the most ancient tradition of harvest with tourists and wine lovers.

Besides the Indigenous varieties, Primitivo, Negroamaro and Fiano of Puglia, International vines such as Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay have been planted, following a rigorous scheme, the result of the scientific micro-zoning study, which preceded the planting. The soil of the land, a carbonate bench of maritime origin resulting from the emergence of the lands in the Pleistocene, and rich in fossils and minerals, has been classified into eleven soil categories, each of which have been associated with just as many vines.

In 2009 a collection of vine biodiversity was planted, which is considered to be the biggest in the world as far as the Mediterranean varietals are concerned, counting 500 minor vines, a project launched in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Milan (Professor Attilio Scienza and Professor Osvaldo Failla), with the aim of preserving a unique source of biodiversity and continuing to study the characteristics and qualitative potential of the vines. Every year the young researchers of the University spend a long period between the vineyard and the cellar to select and then carry out the micro-vinifications of the varieties which demonstrate the greatest potential, subsequently tasted together with the University’s team of experts.

The Winery

The underground winery is thermally insulated, with a large garden roof which optimizes the visual impact and has the purpose of recovering rain and irrigation water, previously extracted from the groundwater well, then purified on its own and used for the operations in the cellar. A phytodepuration system with papyruses cleans it, thus restoring their PH before being released back into the environment.

A sinuous path among Mediterranean aromatic herbs, the vegetable garden and a sapling vineyard of Primitivo, connects the winery to the old Masseria, recovered respecting the traditional shapes, colors and materials, which welcomes wine tourists in its wide courtyard or inside the old shed.

The Cantina con Cucina project proposes the tasting of fine wines paired with peasant dishes made in the winery kitchen, with formulas inspired by the different seasons and the use of the highest quality Zero-Km products, self-cultivated, and in partnership with the Slow Food Conduct of Manduria city – Lands of Primitivo, of the Apulian Slow Food Presidia.

The Wines

The great care for the vineyards, bred in an integrated pest management, makes it possible to produce highly identifiable wines of the highest quality. The nocturnal harvest is staggered respecting the moments of maximum maturity and phenolic expression of each plot. In the winery, the grapes are processed with soft pressing, short to medium macerations, in oxygen-free environments and at a controlled temperature, to preserve the finest varietal expression of each grape variety. The “Anima” pure line is the expression of this research, also recognizable in blends, such as Sud del Sud, an homage to Carmelo Bene, and QU.ALE, the first democratic wine.
